If you think this is strange, you’re not wrong. A loose lower denture usually means something’s not quite right.

Before you jump straight to denture adhesive, read this post. There could be a longer-lasting solution to your problem.

Reasons Why Your Denture Might Be Loose

When your lower denture shifts and slides while you’re trying to eat or hold a conversation, your first thought might be “why?” There are several possible reasons why your oral appliance seems to refuse to sit still, including:

Improper fit. Even if your denture fit right as rain when you first got it, time can change the shape of your oral structure – and your oral appliance. You might just be due for a replacement.

Damage. Have you dropped your lower denture recently? Or noticed any cracks or chips? The smallest of damages can make a big difference on how your denture rests on your gums.

Your saliva. Believe it or not, normal saliva helps your denture stay suctioned to your gums. An overly dry mouth or an irregular saliva texture could throw off this effect.

Jawbone recession. Without dental roots to provide it with essential stimulation, the jawbone actually reabsorbs back into your body, essentially shrinking. When this happens, your gums don’t have the support they need to hold onto your denture!

How to Keep Your Denture in Place

Denture adhesive is definitely one route you can take to keep your lower denture secure. However, it should be used sparingly, and if the underlying issue isn’t taken care of, you’ll continue to experience difficulties. Instead, visit your dentist so they can take a closer look at your oral appliance. Depending on the situation, they might:

Adjust your denture so that it fits better and more comfortably.

Repair minor damage.

Provide a replacement if necessary.

Recommend removable denture alternatives.

Dentures are a good tooth replacement solution for many people, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re right for you. Your dentist can consult with you about a fixed restoration like implant dentures or dental implants, which are anchored in place and won’t feel slippery in your mouth. Communicate with them honestly and clearly about your concerns, and they’ll help you find your best-fit solution!

About the Practice

Drs. Kristopher R.
