However, as common as alcohol may be, there are several myths about it. There are plenty of them about how it can affect your smile<\/a>, but it\u2019s important you know the facts. Here\u2019s the truth behind three of them you need to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Myth #1: Alcohol Can Be Hydrating<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While most beers are about 90% water, they might not actually help with your water intake. Instead, alcohol can do the opposite. This beverage is a diuretic, which means it increases how much urine your body produces. You may be more prone to dehydration and dry mouth because of it. Without enough saliva in your mouth, harmful bacteria can more easily attack your teeth and cause cavities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth #2: Citrus Makes Alcoholic Drinks Healthier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lemon, lime, orange, and other citrus garnishes are a popular way to give a drink a refreshing taste. As healthy as they may be alone, they aren’t the best for your smile. These items are acidic, so they can wear down your enamel over time. Alcohol also already has this trait, meaning there’s double the trouble!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth #3: Alcohol Doesn\u2019t Affect Your Oral Health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Just like with the foods you eat, what you drink can definitely have an impact on your oral health. The two myths above might\u2019ve already spoiled this point, but alcohol can increase your risk of dental problems. It can erode your enamel, leaving it more vulnerable to bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only that, but you may be more prone to gum disease as well. Heavy consumption weakens your immune system, so your body will have a harder time fighting off infection and inflammation. In fact, a study showed how regular alcohol users generally had more plaque and gum bleeding than nondrinkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Can I Enjoy Alcohol Safely?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The good news is that you don\u2019t have to completely quit drinking alcohol. Instead, you should make sure that you do it in moderation and on occasion. When you do enjoy it, be sure to sip water afterward to wash away bacteria and sugars stuck in your smile. Once you have had your last one, wait 30 minutes before you brush and floss. Acidic items soften your enamel, so doing your oral hygiene routine right away can cause harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last but not least, visit your dentist! They will be able to make sure your enamel is in great shape and catch any problems while they are minor. That way, you feel confident knowing your grin is the best it deserves to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
