Gum recession is a common condition that occurs so gradually that\nmany people don\u2019t even realize it\u2019s happening until the later stages. Here\u2019s\nwhat you need to know about receding gums \u2013 their causes, their symptoms, and how\nthey can be treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Gum Recession and Why Does it Happen?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In gum recession, the gums wear away and expose more of the\ntooth, which can include the roots; this area is not as well protected and\ntends to be more vulnerable to decay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many factors that can cause the gums to recede. Oftentimes,\nthe culprit is a periodontal disease, which is a bacterial infection in the\ngums that can destroy the tissue; genetics and poor oral hygiene can make you more\nvulnerable to such conditions. Other causes include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Overly aggressive brushing and flossing <\/li><li>Misaligned teeth<\/li><li>Bruxism (grinding teeth while asleep)<\/li><li>Gum trauma<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the Symptoms of Gum Recession?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While the changes caused by gum recession will be hard to\nnotice at first, you\u2019ll eventually notice that your teeth will appear much\nlonger than normal. If the roots have been exposed, you\u2019ll likely experience\nincreased sensitivity to temperature. If gum recession is being caused by an\ninfection, the bacteria under the teeth may cause them to feel loose; other\nsigns of infection include bleeding in the mouth after brushing and flossing, swollen\ngums and bad breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can Receding Gums be Treated?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that if gum recession is caught early\nenough, it can often be fixed more easily. Your dentist can determine the\nunderlying problem and prescribe an appropriate solution. For example,\nantibiotics can be used for an infection while a mouthguard might be prescribed\nfor bruxism. You may also be advised to get a new toothbrush or change your\nflossing habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes professional treatment may be required. For receding\ngums that are the result of periodontitis (the advanced form of periodontal\ndisease), scaling and root planing can be used to provide a deeper cleaning and\nresolve the issue. Other times, a gum graft may be necessary; this is when a\nsynthetic particle or a piece of tissue is placed to help the gums grow back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can I Avoid Gum Recession?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, taking care of your gums can often help you prevent\nrecession from occurring in the first place. Good oral hygiene practices \u2013\nbrushing twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pvcompletedentistry.com\/preventive-dentistry.html\">seeing the\ndentist<\/a> twice a year \u2013 is key; remember to brush gently, and don\u2019t use hard\nbristles or an abrasive toothpaste. Limiting your intake of sugary foods and giving\nup smoking can also be beneficial to the health of your gums. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also important to pay attention to any changes in your\nmouth.
