According to the CDC, most colds last between 7 and\n10 days. During that time, you need to be diligent about taking care of your\nbody, and that naturally includes your mouth. The following 4 tips will help\nyou protect your oral health even while you\u2019re constantly coughing and\nsneezing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Look for Cough Drops and Cold Medications That are Sugar Free<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A cough drop or some liquid medication could be just what you\nneed to soothe a sore throat. However, some of these products contain sugars\nsuch as fructose. As you\u2019re probably aware, exposure to sugar can significantly\nincrease your risk for cavities; cough drops can be especially damaging since\nthey remain in the mouth for a long time. Luckily, there are plenty of sugar-free\nlozenges and tablet medications to choose from. In fact, a sugar-free cough\ndrop can actually be beneficial for your oral health because it boosts saliva\nproduction and prevents dry mouth (which is a common risk factor for many oral\nhealth issues). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Pick the Right Fluids<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve probably already heard that you need to drink plenty\nof fluids when you\u2019re feeling under the weather. However, certain fluids will\nbe better for your teeth (and your body overall) than others. Naturally, water\nis your best choice for staying hydrated; as an added benefit, it will help\nwash away the bacteria and acids that can eat away at the tooth\u2019s enamel. Sugar-free\nsports drinks may also be an option if you need an energy boost. It\u2019s okay to\nenjoy low-sugar juice as well, but be sure to follow it with water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Maintain Your Oral Hygiene Routine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your dentist has been telling you to brush twice a day and\nfloss daily ever since you were a child. Even if your cold leaves you feeling exhausted,\nyou should be maintaining good oral hygiene at all times. (Incidentally, unless\nyou have a compromised immune system, there\u2019s typically no need to replace your\ntoothbrush once you\u2019re better.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Pay Attention to the Side Effects of Your Medication<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the decongestants used to relieve a stuffy nose can\ndry out your mouth. A dry mouth means less saliva to help keep the mouth clean.\nTo avoid this, drink plenty of water and suck on sugar-free candy. A humidifier\nor vaporizer might also help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk to your dentist if you have any other concerns about\nyour teeth while you\u2019re sick; they can also provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pvcompletedentistry.com\/preventive-dentistry.html\">preventive\ncare<\/a> that will make it easier to protect yourself from oral diseases.
