Do you have sleep apnea?  Obstructive sleep apnea is a common condition characterized by brief lapses in breath during sleep.  These can range from just a few in the course of an evening to so many that sleep is severely disturbed.  A significant percentage of people that suffer from obstructive sleep apnea don’t even know they have the affliction.  Hopefully this can shed some insight into the problem.

What are Some Symptoms of Sleep Apnea?

People that suffer from sleep apnea most often find themselves abnormally tired during the day, even after what seemed to be a full night of sleep.  In addition, a lack of concentration, irritability, and general haziness often make daytime much more challenging.  Morning headaches, dry mouth, and a sore throat can also by symptoms.

In addition, this problem has been shown to cause serious systemic problems.  An increase chance for high blood pressure, cardiac arrest, stroke, irregular heartbeats, as well as diabetes can all be a result of sleep apnea.  Finally, the fatigue caused during the day can increase the risk of work-related or driving accidents.

How do I Know if I Have Sleep Apnea?

This is often a difficult situation to diagnose.  Your bed partner sometimes is the best and often the only one to help.  Snoring is a common signal that you may have sleep apnea.  The cessations in breathing can often be audible as well.  Your primary care physician can refer you to a sleep specialist if there is question.

How Can the Dentist Treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

If you have sleep apnea and have been treated for it, generally you have a CPAP.  If not and you have not heard of this, the CPAP is a device where a mask is worn over the face during sleep and air is gently forced down the airway to prevent the lapse in breath.  The most common review of the CPAP system is that it is uncomfortable, often to the point where it is not worn at all.  Instead of suffering the symptoms and risking these serious complications, a alternative should be considered.  The dental approach is to gently open the airway so the breath is enabled to flow in a natural manner.  This is done with a customized mouthpiece that is much more comfortable and is much more readily worn.  We are happy to offer sleep apnea treatment for our patients with Somnodent and Embletta.
