Most people have some kind of daily routine, where the roll out of bed, stumble into the bathroom, and take a look in the mirror. Unfortunately, if you’re unhappy with your smile, one of the first things you see may ruin your whole day.

There are no shortages of ways that your smile can look less-than-stellar, and some of them may even leave you scratching your head, wondering what the issue could be. For example, some people can develop white spots on their teeth, with them sometimes even appearing out of nowhere.

One of the nice things about a dentist is that they can not only explain these issues to you, but provide a solution. If you have white spots on your teeth, here are a few reasons why that could be the case, and what you can do about it.

Why Do I Have White Spots On My Teeth?

There are several reasons why you could have white spots on your teeth, which can make it a little bit difficult to resolve the issue on your own. Here are just some examples:

Bacterial Infection

Having white spots on your teeth can be a sign that bacteria have taken over, usually after having been allowed to fester for quite a while.

Excessive Fluoride

While fluoride is an essential mineral for your oral health, there can be too much of a good thing. Fluorosis occurs when you’ve ingested too much fluoride, like if you swallow too much of your toothpaste. It can result in  fragile enamel and white spots on the teeth.

Medications

Some medications, like amoxicillin, have been demonstrated to change the composition of the enamel, which can lead to tell-tale white spots. This complication is most common in children.

What Can Be Done?

As you might imagine, the solution depends on what caused the discoloration in the first place. If bacteria is the problem your dentist may recommend a deep cleaning of your teeth. Once your teeth are in good health, you might also be interested in teeth whitening to erase the spots.

If the discoloration is stubborn, you may also be interested in porcelain veneers to cover up the issue. Whichever route you go, talking to your dentist will allow you to address any problems you have in no time at all!
