Everyone knows (at least we hope) that you should brush and floss regularly, visit the dentist, and try not to subside on a diet entirely consisting of candy. There has to, however, be more to it than just the simple things.  After all your dentist has undergone years of education and training to provide you with great care.  The following quiz merely scratches the surface but it will hopefully enlighten you to some interesting facts about your pearly whites.

  3.   B – What matters is the frequency of ingestion of carbohydrates not the amount per occurrence.  Frequent snacking on fermentable carbohydrates is a risk factor for tooth decay.
  4.   D – The American Dental Association recommends brushing for two minutes twice per day to maintain optimal oral health.
  5.   B – enamel is the calcified outer layer of the teeth.  It is the hardest substance in the body.  It does not regenerate so keeping the enamel healthy is important for your future!
  6.   A – “First visit by first birthday” is the general rule of thumb with children.  If, however, you have a child that is younger and you suspect some kind of pathology an earlier appointment can never hurt.

  8.   A – The studies show that replacing the toothbrush any more often than this has not proven to be beneficial.
  9.   D – Gingivitis is a broad term referring to any inflammation of the gums.  It is important to visit your dentist if you have inflamed gums.  If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis which leads to loss of the supporting structures that hold the teeth in place and eventually to tooth loss.
